Our Faker’s Guide series will give you the scoop from the loudspeaker of the city’s most committed soccer (or footie) savants as they get ready to root their national team on to glory in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The plus side for the soccer uninitiated is that, right here, you'll find all you need to sound in the know.
With our own national team staying home as per usual, Toronto has really come alive with international allegiances from frenzied football supporters. In this instalment of our Faker’s Guide, we tackle the big one, the host country itself, Brazil leading up to their big semi-final match against Germany today at 4 p.m.
Michael Rudan is the owner of CopaCabana Brazilian Rodizio. They will be offering up a true Brazilian experience Saturday July 13 on the occasion of the World Cup Final to cap off a most eventful tournament. All screens will be turned to the match, but they’re also creating even more atmosphere with Samba dancers, drums and all-you can eat Rodizio. It’s $35 per person and they’re recommending reservations.
If you could describe how big a football fan you are in one memory, what would it be?
My biggest personal footie memory would be playing in the Ontario Cup Finals when I was 14 in Niagara! I also played in regionals.
How far back does your fandom go?
I’ve been playing since I was a kid, and now me and my kids are big fans. Rinaldo is mine and my kids choice player.
What are Brazil’s actual chances going into the semis against Germany?
Considering the fact that the World Cup is in Brazil we’d like to say the chances are high! It will be tough without Neymar Jr. but we are happy to hear that Dani Alves will be returning today! Sending positive vibes to Brazil today!
What is the nickname of the team?
Samba Kings
Do you have a favourite piece of memorabilia or football swag?
Authentic Barcelona shorts.
What is the drink of choice for a true Brazilian football fan?
Definitely Caipirinha’s and always beer! Typical Brazilian beers are Brahma or Skol.
Has the World Cup put the focus on Brazilian culture and cuisine here in Toronto?
Absolutely. We have been busy for most games at CopaCabana. Brazil offers a culinary experience meant for all footy fans. We keep the grilled rodizio coming and we'll ensure the beers and caipirinha’s are full.
Who are the best players that I can recognize and sound like I know what I'm talking about?
Hulk, Julio Cesar, Marcelo, Luiz, Oscar
And who are some of the old guys that I can make fun of?
Dante, Maicon
Who is their arch nemesis?
Argentina
What is the big question mark going into this World Cup?
Can Brazil make it past Germany to get into the finals? Will we see a classic Brazil vs Argentina final or will the Dutch team succeed and do what they couldn’t do four years ago?
What’s the best spot to watch a Brazil game here in Toronto?
We have a big World Cup final’s party this weekend! All-you-can-eat Brazilian rodizio, samba dancers, drums and much more.
Has being the host nation put more hype on the Brazilian team and more of a spotlight on the behaviour of its fans?
Absolutely! There is so much pressure for Brazil to win and soccer fans worldwide are very passionate about the World Cup so the spotlight is on at all times.
If they win, do I sing some sort of song or just high five people?
Brazil is known for the Samba drums… lots of noise!
What should I wear?
Green and yellow!
How will I recognize and approach other legitimate Brazilian football fans?
They will be wearing a jersey.
If not Brazil, who do you think is the favourite to take it all home?
We are definitely cheering for Brazil but lots of people are in favour of Germany.
