Post City in the Park: The Strumbellas hit Evergreen Brick Works

Evergreen Brick Works has quickly grown into one of the most beloved public spaces in Toronto. And it’s here we met up with three members of local band the Strumbellas to showcase their rootsy sound set against the rough-and-tumble Brick Works background. Fresh from a Juno Award for roots and traditional band of the year, the Strumbellas are set to tour western Canada this summer and into fall before heading into the studio early in 2015 to craft what will be their third album.

Although appreciative of their recent success, Simon Ward, vocalist and guitarist, is far from content. “I feel good about it. I mean, I feel good, but it’s kind of one of those things,” says Ward, who founded the band back in 2008 by posting an ad on Craigslist.

“You can’t sit on it for too long, gotta keep going. So I’m focusing on what I’m doing next.”

The band will play next month’s Toronto Urban Roots Festival before heading out on tour. Ward is continuing to write for their next album and recently decided to move back to his hometown of Lindsay, Ont.

“I moved out of the city two weeks ago back to my home area,” says Ward. “I couldn’t afford to pay rent. As it turns out, until you’re U2, you don’t make a lot of money in this business, so you gotta make some sacrifices, you know?”

Joining Ward at Evergreen Brick Works were drummer Jeremy Drury and violinist Isabel Ritchie. The other three members of the band are David Ritter, Jon Hembrey and Darryl James.
