Design firm behind La Carnita branches out with new streetwear line

Now that former pop-up La Carnita has had a brick-and-mortar location for a while, you may have forgotten about their unusual roots—as a side project of Toronto digital and design firm OneMethod, whereby they gave away free tacos with the purchase of original art. The city, quite predictably, swooned. OneMethod intended to “set trends” and succeeded in creating something of a zeitgeist.

Now, the team is branching out yet again with the launch of ONEMETH, a new streetwear line.

The first capsule collection — The Free Trade Collection — will focus on the relationship between Canada and our neighbour to the south, and will feature six original silk screen-printed shirt designs, as well as a hat, a bandana and two posters. Tees will ring in at $40, and tank tops at $35.

“Borders and restrictions — those things need to go. Ideas and culture and even the food we eat all seem to transcend countries and cities, so I think we need to embrace that,” said Amin Todai, CCO of OneMethod and the ONEMETH clothing line, in a press release. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of where I come from, I’m just also into all the places I go to and I don’t think they need to be so separate.”

The two core designs of the collection explore this connection quite literally: one by melding the flags of Canada and the U.S., and the other by pairing other cities' airport codes with Toronto's own YYZ, all in a clean black-and-gold palette.

The collection will debut with a pop-up shop at OneMethod headquarters (445 King St. W.) on July 2nd, and purchase of an item from the pop-up shop will grant entry to a launch party at Home of the Brave on July 4 (American Independence Day). The line will then be available online at onemethod.com beginning July 5.
