There’s a trend toward the outdoors this weekend as May finally rolls around. Hopefully the weather holds up. Whether you’re an ultimate frisbee fanatic, thrill junky, poultry gluton or just want to take a contemplative stroll in your favourite area of the city, it’s all available here.
The Toronto Rush
There is just one professional sports franchise in this city that has won the league championship every year of its existence, and that’s the Toronto Rush. Sure, they only have one year under their belts, and the sport is ultimate frisbee, but that’s not a bad record. The team is eager to defend its AUDL crown and squares off against the Rochester Dragons this Saturday, May 3 at 6 p.m. on their home field at Varsity Stadium.
Canada’s Wonderland
Traffic considerations are what they are this weekend, but if you just can’t wait to be among the first to try out the new 4D Wonder Mountain’s Guardian attraction at Canada’s favourite amusement park, then Sunday is the day for you. All the old favourites are back and the remarkable Leviathan coaster is still the finest this country has to offer. Expect lines and remember to empty your pockets before riding. At least you won't have to ward off peak summer temperatures.
Jane’s Walk
Another way to get out and about and see the city without a car this weekend is to attend one of the multitude of Toronto Jane’s Walks. The walks are named after famed urban-thinker Jane Jacobs who spent a great deal of her life in Toronto. Volunteers lead a troupe on a tour of a certain area with a specific theme in mind. All of this is designed to encourage discussion about how to use communal space and effectively build the city’s neighbourhoods. There’s a walk for just about everything, but some big ones include Waterfront Toronto, Nature in the City and Pedestrian Wayfaring in Toronto.
SheDot Comedy Festival
Toronto’s Festival of Funny Women brings the laughter all weekend long. Thursday at Comedy Bar (945 Bloor St. W) will have a run of shows in different formats from improv to sketch ($12). Friday and Saturday features four different workshops ($50-75) at Baltic Avenue. Finally there’s a gala event Sunday night at The Opera House at 7 p.m. The event is hosted by Trish Stratus with guests including Elvira Kurt and proceeds going to the Jo-Anna Downey Fund.
Toronto Wing Festival
And of course, after an entire weekend of fun, it’s time to chow down on a massive selection of chicken wings. The event takes place at Daniel’s Spectrum. There are dozens of wing vendors around to fill you up and send you home clucking. The main event is a contest to determine chicken wing supremacy and on the panel are the Food Network’s Bob Blumer and Nobu “Wing Machine” Adilman.
