Ever heard of Model Citizen? It's this great little menswear shop nestled in Kensington Market. The owner, Julian Finkel, is a household name in our city's indie retail scene, and he's got a devout group of customers to back it up.
I love popping into this place during my Saturday morning walks through my neighbourhood. Their selection is brilliantly curated, they stock some great Canadian stuff, and Marcel, one of their sales associates, is the go-to man for menswear. "You've got to check this line out. It's called Kovalum," he told me, pointing at this undeniably '50s-looking, printed short-sleeve oxford.
The shirt feels durable and looks utilitarian, yet exudes the sort of simple elegance that a young Miles Davis would have certainly appreciated. Not bad at all.
Kovalum was started by Toronto lawyer Mark Johnson in 2010, and the line takes its name from a beach in Southern India, where his wife is from.
He became inspired to launch the line after all the compliments he received from wearing a classic pullover anorak that he discovered a few years ago (his father wore it in the '60s). "[When we started] we sold those anoraks, as well as t-shirts and casual shirts. Today, we’re focused on providing men with classic, masculine looks. Our spring collection is now in stores in Toronto and we’re excited about rolling out our fall/winter collection."
