The week in 10 easy clicks: Drake, Demar DeRozan, Sunnybrook live tweets, Stintz for mayor and more

Our weekly recap of the week’s news nuggets in Toronto will bring you up to date and add some fuel to your small-talk tank heading into the weekend.

Live from your chest cavity, it’s Sunnybrook Now

Toronto hospital made the news yesterday by being the first hospital (probably) to live tweet a cardiac bypass surgery. Tweeting under the hash tag #SBHeart, the hospital demonstrated how Dr. Dekel and Dr. Cohen operated on a patient named “Lou” complete with photographs and even a close-up video of Lou’s ticker. Fascinating.

Sunday could be an interesting day on city streets

In a bold and decisive move for democracy, Toronto city council voted to allow bars to open up early so people can have booze with their Olympic gold medal hockey game.

Beer goggles

In similar, but different news, Toronto is now home to a new ladies-only beer appreciation league. Dubbed the Society of Beer Drinking Ladies, the initiative has been overwhelmingly popular and apparently a larger venue space needed to be secured for the first event.

Drake taps Outkast?

Torontonians rejoice, for our prodigal hip hopping son Drake has went out into the world, found a time machine and jetted back a decade only to return with the once-famous Outkast now slated to appear live at Drake’s OVO Fest when it returns to the grassy confines of Molson Ampitheatre on Aug. 3 and 4.

Phew Day is here

On Feb. 20,  Doug Ford announced he wouldn’t run provincially, instead opting to help his brother get elected mayor. This prompted  proud Torontonians (okay, us) to rename the date “Phew Day.”

Raptor is ‘scary good’

When a basketball player makes the cover of alternative news magazine Now, it’s gotta mean something good is happening. This week, Now featured the team’s only bona fide all-star Demar DeRozan, on its cover basically calling the talented youngster the best thing to happen to Dinos ball since Vince Carter. We couldn’t agree more.

Stintz ready to challenge Ford

Toronto city councillor Karen Stintz has announced that she is ready to sign on the dotted line and challenge Rob Ford for mayor in this year’s municipal election. Apparently, she tweeted that she has filled out the paperwork and will be launching her campaign Monday at 10 a.m.

It's figure skating, what are you gonna do?

When our ice dancers lost out to their American rivals for the gold medal in Sochi, there were a few eyebrows raised, sure. But, that’s the nature of the beast. Or so we thought. When Yuna Kim — the incredible Korean skater once coached by Toronto’s Brian Orser — was apparently robbed of her rightful position atop the podium, all of a sudden more than a million angry figure skating fans have come out of the woodwork to protest. Sheesh.

Up Shitt's Creek

In a move that is sure to translate into some serious laughs, CBC has announced that legendary funny folk Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara have begun work on a new comedy series called Shitt’s Creek. Levy and O’Hara have a serious comedic track record from their days at SCTV to films such as The Mighty Wind. Expect hilarity.

Fallon does Ford

Newly minted host of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon, didn’t take long to work Rob Forb into the routine. Our wonderful mayor was front and centre in Fallon’s second episode. I’m won’t keep you in suspense, click the link and watch the magic happen.
