Despite its fair share of press and an ahead-of-the-curve menu, Hoof Raw Bar failed to make as great an impact as desired. But when Jen Agg recently transformed the space into Rhum Corner, she hit the nail on the head. Both the atmosphere and the menu are far more welcoming, what with the mix of world music, titillating artwork, and intoxicating Haitian eats beckoning.
Rum dominates the cocktail menu, with diners choosing between rum and cokes, a selection of cocktails and tropical blended drinks to boot. The Dark ‘n’ Stormy ($9) is an upscale take on the perennial favourite, which our server noted (without a whiff of insincerity) is “the best you'll ever have.” A house blend of spiced rum mixes Havana Club Reserva Añejo 7 and Goslings with a spice medley including allspice, star anise and pink peppercorn. Thomas Lavers provides the ginger beer (which is available on draft at both Rhum Corner and Thomas Lavers in Kensington) and limejuice finishes off the libation, which is far more complex and subtley spiced than your run-of-the-mill take.
After a heady meal, have the piña colada for dessert — its finely spun consistency and just-right level of sweetness make this (another) one to remember.
