Though the fashion avant-garde has often intersected with rock 'n’ roll entertainers, it wasn’t until the appearance of designer John Varvatos that the rock look became something accessible to the masses.
Since 2000, the designer’s popularity has been growing steadily across North America, translating into 12 boutiques, the latest of which opened in Yorkdale this past November. The rocker aesthetic is in full swing within the new shop—the store is chockfull of photographs of musicians, edgy furniture pieces, and a full stage set up with Marshall amps. All three of Varvatos’ brands—John Varvatos Collection, John Varvatos USA, and a line of Converse designed by John Varvatos—are available in the store.
Although Varvatos’ designs are rock in appearance, don’t expect to find any references to grunge. The store is full of accessible staples with a decidedly American feel. Clothing is made with old world craftsmanship and modern innovations in textiles and tailoring. Among some of the standouts are slim-cut suits, chinos and jeans in bolder colours (such as dark blue and charcoal), and Varvatos' iconic footwear fitted with metal hardware. Also available are a line of limited-edition watches from Ernst Benz.
The store won't make you feel like you need to retool your whole wardrobe, but rather, will offer up signature pieces with a bit of head-turning moxie.
