A meeting to update residents on a new Bathurst Manor Plaza development plan will be scheduled for this fall.
Local residents will see an updated proposal for the mixed-use residential development planned at the deteriorating retail space at Wilmington Avenue and Overbrook Place. The plaza redevelopment has been delayed many times, and only two other public meetings have been held to discuss it since 2006.
The latest plan proposes two condominium buildings as well as a number of townhomes for a total of 393 residential units. In addition, 570 parking spaces and 228 bicycle spots would be provided. The development would also include 1,920 square metres of retail.
Local councillor James Pasternak said that he predicts a “very negative” backlash from residents at the new meeting. He said that modifications to the original proposal did not go far enough to address the needs of the character of the community.
“The density for that site is totally inappropriate, and the community and myself have deep concerns about it,” he said.
Coun. Pasternak said he would prefer a greater balance between residential and commercial uses for the development, a sentiment echoed by area resident Larry Fischer.
“The general sentiment among the residents is that it needs to be developed — just not developed for maximum monetary gain,” said Fischer. “Never mind discussing how Wilmington Avenue is going to handle another 300 residences and their cars on that street.”
Fischer also shared concerns about a potential residential development’s impact on the overworked local sewer and energy grids.
Coun. James Pasternak said the date for the new meeting has not yet been set, but he expects that the meeting will take place in October. The meeting was approved last year by North York Community Council.
