North York relief line top priority

When it comes to traffic congestion, most agree something must be done. The challenge is identifying priority transit projects and finding funding.

I have never wavered in that our number one subway transit priority is completing the subway between Sheppard-Yonge and Downsview stations, creating an unbroken loop from Don Mills station, to York University and onward to Vaughan — the North York relief line.

In March 2013, the federal government announced a $47 billion fund for infrastructure in Canada, which represents a great opportunity for the City of Toronto to catch up on 25 years of transit neglect. On April 4, Toronto City Council moved aggressively, passing a motion directing the city manager to report on the city's infrastructure needs, including transit.

To fund Ontario transit, the provincial government revealed several funding methods, including highway tolls, sales taxes, parking space levies and transit fare increases. These are not easy to support, as we must ensure funds are targeted toward our local needs.

Under current plans, if someone wants to travel from Scarborough Town Centre to York University, the exhausted commuter must catch a series of buses and trains between Yonge and Sheppard and Downsview station, only to work his or her way to the subway (when opened in 2016) and take it north to York University.

This is just too painful. We must invest the rest of the funds needed to complete a subway line we have already invested almost $4 billion in. With a little help from our friends in Ottawa and Queen’s Park, we can certainly reach that goal.
