A year after undergoing a life-giving surgery, a Richmond Hill child who survived liver disease and his mother are two faces appearing in SickKids’ latest campaign to promote holiday donations.
When Sahir Hussein’s parents were told their now nine-year-old son needed a liver transplant to save his life, they began seeking donors. It was soon discovered that Sahir’s mother, Rizwana, would eventually be the one to give him the “gift of life” — about 30 per cent of her liver.
“I knew that whatever happens, I'll do anything as long as he gets everything that he needs,” said Rizwana. Shahazim, Sahir’s father, said his son was “strong” throughout the ordeal.
Now, inspirational stories like theirs will be appearing on SickKids campaign posters, elevator wraps and even in video clips played before movies in select GTA cinemas until the end of December.
Sahir said he feels “very happy” to be helping other children like him. “People come up to me and say, ‘Wow, you’re amazing’ and stuff,” he said. “I feel like I have a bunch of fans.”
