Porter is charging passengers for an online boarding pass and people are confused

Doing things online is supposed to make things easier, saving on paper, saving on staffing, that sort of thing, but that might not be the case with Toronto’s Porter Airlines. According to a recent post on an online forum, the airline that purports to create an environment where people can “actually enjoy economy,” is allegedly charging people for the privilege of using an online boarding pass.

If passengers don’t pay $39 or more for a package that includes an online boarding pass, they will have to wait in line to have a paper boarding pass printed out for them.

Listed in the airline’s fare options, an electronic boarding pass is not included in the basic category. One must move up to the fancy “standard” option to get the privilege of an absolutely free thing for your phone that allows you to get on the plane. There is also an extra fee for carry-on and checked baggage, allowing just a personal item for free.

The move by Porter has not gone over well with the general public, or at least those on Reddit. Commenters on a post point out that even discount carriers in Europe such as Ryan Air have free electronic boarding passes most likely because it’s cheaper and easier for the airline.

“Can confirm,” said another commenter. “On a flight to the US last July, I refused to pay up so I spent a good half hour in line to get the boarding pass.”

Another commenter jokingly inquired if Porter had been “bought out by Ticketmaster,” a company famous for its exorbitant fees.

A quick look at other small airlines such as Swoop and Lynx indicates no such fees.

According to Porter, the fee structure has not changed in more than five years, and people might just be noticing it as they look for different and more affordable fare options comparing amongst the now-many airlines.

“While the Basic Fare ticket does have an optional fee for receiving an electronic boarding pass, it isn’t mandatory. You would otherwise be able to be pick up a printed boarding pass at the airport for no cost,” stated a Porter spokesperson, via email. “This has been part of Basic Fare conditions since being introduced many years ago and is explicitly stated as part of the terms. It is not new, nor has anything changed.”
