Toronto transit bus, slowest bus routes

Suspect arrested after TTC workers chased with syringe in downtown Toronto

A suspect has been arrested after two TTC workers were chased by an individual wielding a syringe early this morning in Toronto’s Yonge and Dundas neighbourhood.

Officers arrived on scene around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning and have reported the TTC worker is safe with no injuries reported. The suspect was immediately arrested at the scene.

The incident is the third in a succession of attacks made against TTC employees within the last week.  Earlier this week, TTC employees were swarmed by a group of 10 to 15 teenage boys aboard a Scarborough bus. This incident also comes a few days following an incident over the weekend when a TTC bus driver was shot with a BB gun and one day after a  woman was stabbed aboard a Spadina streetcar.

These alarming incidents come off  the heels of other violent attacks aboard public transit in recent months, with a woman getting stabbed aboard a streetcar last Thursday in what appeared to be a random, unprovoked assault. And back in late Dec. 2022, several TTC riders were swarmed and assaulted by a group of teenage girls at various subway stations.

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) 113 union has made several media statements online, calling for support and greater accountability on behalf of Mayor John Tory and the TTC’s CEO Rick Leary.

“These acts of violence are unacceptable and they keep happening,” said union president Marvin Alfred to CityNews. “I know the mayor and other people are calling them isolated incidents, that’s not true. These incidents are happening far too frequently.”
