Now that the stormy weather has cleared, Toronto can get out and enjoy its favourite pastimes: music, celebrations, yoga, the waterfront and boat races, in some of its most popular venues this weekend. Best of all, many of these events are free, so get out there and enjoy the sun.
Om T.O.
When: June 21, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: Distillery District (55 Mill St.)
Details: Don't delay this Saturday morning: slap on those yoga pants, spool up your mat and head straight down to the Distillery District. You will want to get a good spot at this second annual event where thousands of yoga enthusiasts take outdoor courses led by some of Toronto's most popular instructors. It's held on the occasion of the Summer Solstice and is free, but is B.Y.O.M. (mat), in case you're wondering.
World Pride 2014 Opening Ceremony
When: June 20, 7 p.m.
Where: Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen St. W)
Details: Yes, it's only the opening ceremonies to the wider festivities, but nonetheless this should be quite a show. The headliner for the free concert is Melissa Etheridge, but there are several others acts scheduled including Deborah Cox, Steve Grand, and a big to-do around the raising of the Pride flag at City Hall with the original designer Gilbert Baker in attendance.
Toronto Jazz Festival
When: Starts June 19
Where: Various Venues
Details: Well, with a name like that you don't really need much of an explanation as to what to expect here. Best to just tell you that the event kicks off tonight with Chaka Khan at the Kool Haus, Etheridge takes to the stage of Friday, and then two more nights at NFP Saturday and Sunday. Earth, Wind & Fire isn't until next Tuesday, but how could I not mention them?
Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival
When: June 21 and 22
Where: Toronto Centre Island
Details: On your marks, get set, go… to Centre Island this weekend for the 26th running of the famous dragon boat race. This year, there are almost 200 teams and approximately 5,000 people registered. You can check out the festival, which is put on by the Toronto Chinese Business Association, or help raise funds for SickKids by registering as a "Dragon" here.
Waterfront Festival Toronto
When: June 20 to 22
Where: All along the Waterfront
Details: After a rain-soaked early week here in Toronto, all these water-themed events may seem like overkill, but in truth when the sun shines there's nowhere nicer to be. This year's fest has all kinds of neat thrills and spectacles. You can take in some music at Sugar Beach, watch the 2014 North American Flyboard championships, ponder dogs doing water sport tricks or just take the little ones to the Kids Zone as you walk the stretch.
