Toronto Police fatally shoot man armed with knife, SIU investigating

According to the latest report from Toronto Police Service (TPS) via social media, an incident occurred in the east end of Toronto that resulted in the unfortunate death of an armed man.

The TPS were notified at around 12:30 p.m. about an individual brandishing a knife in the vicinity of Danforth and Victoria Park Avenues. Responding promptly to the call, a police officer discharged their firearm in an attempt to neutralize the situation. The man was immediately transported to the hospital via an emergency run, but, according to a local media report, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called upon to investigate the incident. As the province’s police watchdog, the SIU has a mandate to conduct independent investigations whenever there is an allegation of serious injury, death, or sexual assault involving a police officer. SIU will be examining the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine if there was any wrongdoing or negligence on the part of the police officer involved.
