Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the City of Toronto this morning, warning Torontonians to expect a “sharp cold front” with strong winds and a sudden temperature drop this afternoon.

Before the cold front, Toronto residents could see a record-breaking high of up to 13 C before dropping to a low of -3 C within a few hours.

In its weather advisory, Environment Canada notes that the strong cold front is expected to track through southern Ontario this afternoon, causing temperatures to drop dramatically, along with the development of strong northwesterly winds gusting to 70 or 80 km/h for much of the afternoon and evening.

“Winds are expected to ease tonight,” the advisory notes, but the “sudden temperature drop may lead to icy surfaces as temperatures fall below the freezing mark through the day.”

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.”

Temperatures are expected to rise slightly on Thursday, reaching a high of 0 C along with a mix of sun and clouds, and will warm up substantially by the weekend, reaching highs of 8 C on Saturday, 9 C on Sunday, and 11 C on Monday.

Earlier this month, Toronto broke a temperature record, cracking 11 C on Feb. 9, and surpassing a daily record (10.6 C) set on the same day in 1938.
