Students huddle in cold as U of T’s Athletic Centre goes up in smoke

A fire erupted in the University of Toronto's Athletic Centre earlier this afternoon, putting a damper on students' New Year's fitness resolutions.

Black smoke billowed from the Athletic Centre while numerous fire trucks were parked outside the large building at Spadina and Harbord. Lucy Harris, an Annex resident, says she didn't realize the building was on fire until she saw dozens of evacuated exercisers, wearing shorts and tank tops, huddled together outside in the -17 degree weather.

"At first I assumed it was just a very cruel fire drill, but then I noticed all the smoke," she says.

With seven gymnasia, three pools and numerous studios, the Athletic Centre is one of the largest buildings on the university campus. A U of T spokesperson confirmed that nobody was injured in the fire, which was caused by a piece of installation that caught fire during routine maintenance. The fire is now extinguished.
