Splendido space to reopen as Piano Piano

Judging by posts on Facebook, Victor Barry plans to reopen the space on Harbord that was Splendido as an Italian trattoria called Piano Piano.

The recent New Year’s Eve service was the last for Splendido. By 2015, its focus on tasting menus and luxurious ingredients — like the $325 truffle event in November — made it an exception in the generally more casual Toronto dining scene.

Based on a photo posted on the restaurant’s Facebook page, Barry has hired Tiffany Pratt as designer and Ernst Wallner as contractor for the renovation.

Before David Lee took over the kitchen at Splendido there was a pizza oven in the kitchen and speculation is that Piano Piano will return to those roots.

Here’s a primer on what the phrase “piano, piano” means. Maybe there’s a further clue in there as to what the specific menu concept will be. We reached out to Barry for comment, but he has not responded.
