Located right by the Distillery District’s front gates, the Brick Street Bakery has been wooing Torontonians since 2001. Known for its selection of baked treats, the homey space is filled with the scent of just-out-of-the-oven bread, which includes picks such as warm croissants and basil and parsley loaves. Although there are now four locations around town, we still think that the original trumps the rest. One of the most popular menu items here is the Coronation Chicken sandwich. Hailing from across the pond, this sandwich got its royal beginnings thanks to chefs Constance Spry and Rosemary Hume back in 1953. At Queen Liz’s coronation — in which foreign guests were bound to have post-ceremony hunger — cold curried chicken sandwiches were deemed just the ticket, being both palatable and easy to prepare in advance. Brick Street Bakery’s ($7.50) comes packed with roasted chicken that’s smothered in a lightly curried mayo. The goods are topped with thinly sliced Granny Smith apple, hunks of dried apricot and a smattering of almonds. It’s all parcelled between two thick slices of the bakery’s own whole wheat bread. If the Queen approves it, so do we.
