Mantra, located in the Shops at Don Mills "restaurant row," is redefining what modern Indian food looks and tastes likes. Under the guidance of chef Ashish Sethi — who was under the guidance of his father, Sanjiv Sethi, the man responsible for the Host chain — Mantra does everything from Indian-style high tea to a classic chicken biryani served in a clay pot covered by naan to butter chicken in bao buns, thus seamlessly fusing staples of both Indian and Chinese cuisines. Mantra also introduces diners to Nepalese cuisine with its momo chicken dumplings and classic Sri Lankan street food with the chicken kuttu roti. The welcoming yet refined brick space boasts high ceilings, but instead of a second-floor dining area, Mantra has opted for an open kitchen wherein diners are welcome to observe the chefs at work.
