The chefs and owners of new restaurants this week seem to be operating on the idea that we wouldn't want to tackle large, multi-course meals in the summer heat. Instead, we have a new lunch counter with roast chicken, a wine bar on Yonge and a casual Vietnamese spot downtown.
Just Opened
- The chef-owner of the Harbord Room, Cory Vitiello has opened Flock on Adelaide West.
- Where Centro was for a long time (and Vita Sociale for a short time) midtowners now have the second location of Cibo Wine Bar.
- Bac Ky Vietnamese Canteen quietly opened in the King and Portland area. Judging by this post on Kijiji they are still staffing up.
Coming Soon
- By mid-July, the office dwellers of First Canadian Place will have a new source for all their trad French pastry needs called Maman.
Restaurant Coverage
- Declaring one of Toronto’s major food festivals “the biggest” is dangerous business, so let's just say that Taste of Toronto is “really big” and you should read our preview of the event here.
- Champagne, oysters and sunshine are the key ingredients to this week’s lunch pick, the terrace menu at Auberge du Pommier.
- Sushi and robata join forces at Yutaka. Here's our First Look.
- We have a First Look at the latest downtown lunch option, the first Canadian location for Noodles & Company.
- The list of restaurants participating in Summerlicious has grown overwhelmingly long, so we prepared a summary of Joanne Kates’s favourites that are part of the promotion.
- With a menu focussed tightly on roast chicken and vegetable-heavy sides and salads, Cory Vitiello is walking the healthy walk with his new joint, Flock.
Changes and Other News
- According to a post on Reddit, July 5 at 12:01 a.m. has been set as the strike deadline for UFCW1000a, the local representing Loblaws employees. Another post reports that contract employees who normally run the sample stations are being trained as replacement cashiers, at least at the Forest Hill location.
