Ontario reports 848 COVID-19 cases over last two days as capacity limits lifted across province

On Tuesday, the province reported 390 new cases of COVID-19—260 cases are in people who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 130 are in fully vaccinated individuals.

Tuesday’s cases are a moderate decrease from the 458 new cases recorded for Monday—333 cases were in individuals who are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccination status and 125 were in fully vaccinated individuals.

The majority of cases that took place over the last two days took place in Toronto (221 cases), followed by York Region (129 cases), Peel Region (125 cases), Ottawa (108 cases), Hamilton (86 cases), and Windsor-Essex (76 cases).

To date, Ontario has recorded 592,714 COVID-19 infections, including 578,553 recoveries and 9,792 deaths.

Today’s numbers come a few days after the provincial government announced the lifting of capacity limits in select indoor and outdoor settings where proof of vaccination is required, as well as certain outdoor settings that have a capacity below 20,000.

Capacity limits are now lifted to allow 100% capacity in the following settings:

  • Concert venues, theatres and cinemas;
  • Spectator areas of facilities for sports and recreational fitness (would not include gyms, personal training);
  • Meeting and event spaces (indoor meeting and event spaces will still need to limit capacity to the number that can maintain physical distancing);
  • Horseracing tracks, car racing tracks, and other similar venues; and
  • Commercial film and television productions with studio audiences.

“As we continue to see more Ontarians roll up their sleeves with over 22 million doses administered, our government is cautiously lifting capacity limits in select settings where we know the proof of vaccination requirements are providing an added layer of protection to Ontarians,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said in a statement. “The fight against COVID-19 is not over and we must all remain vigilant by continuing to follow the public health measures we know work and keep us safe, and receiving your first or second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine if you have not already done so.”

In Ontario, as of Tuesday morning, Elliott reported that 22,089,455 vaccine doses have been administered. Nearly 87.1% of Ontarians 12+ have received one dose and nearly 82.4% have received two doses. Elliott reports that 155 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, with 149 people in ICU due to COVID-19 (although not all hospitals report on holidays).
