Toronto hospital advances largest expansion in 56-Year history

North York General hospital (NYGH) and Infrastructure Ontario (IO), in partnership with the Ontario government is taking the next step on an advanced New Patient Care Tower with the release of the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to form a project team.

The new Patient Care Tower is part of NYGH’s largest expansion in its 56-year history and will increase its capacity to serve a diverse and rapidly growing population that is projected to exceed 500,000 in 10 years.

“The Request for Qualifications marks a pivotal milestone in NYGH’s journey to build a transformative new Tower to deliver the highest standard of care to future generations of patients and families,” said Mitch Frazer, chair of the NYGH Board of Governors. “Together with our partners – the Ontario Government, Infrastructure Ontario, the City of Toronto – and with the unwavering support of our donors and community, this advanced tower will help redefine our hospital’s impact on the health and wellbeing of our communities.”

The RFQ is the first step in the process to select a team to deliver the project. Submissions will be reviewed to shortlisted teams with required design and construction experience and the financial capacity to deliver on a project of this size and complexity. Shortlisted teams will be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP), which is expected to be released in the summer of 2025.

Once complete, the new tower will include 11 new floors of patient care spaces. The tower will connect to NYGH’s existing building, and will be located right across the street from NYGH’s groundbreaking 528-bed long-term care development that is planned to be built at 4000 Leslie St. and connected to community-based services delivered by NYGH and partner organizations across North York.

The new tower will house up to 317 private patient bedrooms, expanding NYGH’s inpatient capacity by approximately 100 net-new beds. The massive expansion will also provide space for specialized services including a large, modern emergency department, expanded critical care and surgery programs, and a new birthing centre, including a neonatal intensive care unit.

“This modern space will build on NYGH’s position as a leading academic community hospital known for exceptional quality and personalized experiences,” said Dr. Everton Gooden, president & CEO, NYGH. “As we create a bold 10-year Vision and new Strategic Plan for NYGH, this extraordinary new space will be integral to how we will improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in our communities and beyond.”
