One person was taken to hospital after a gun was discharged at a Toronto high school, police say.

The incident occurred on Thursday at East York Alternative Secondary School at 670 Cosburn Ave. at around 1 p.m. Police say they received a call that a fight had broken out in one of the school’s washrooms.

Acting Inspector Jason Albanese said that one bullet was fired from the gun and it ricocheted off the wall and hit a school outreach worker’s shoe. The worker was trying to intervene in the altercation.

According to Albanese, the man was transported to the hospital, but the injuries he sustained were described as “very minor.”

“We were very fortunate that nobody was seriously injured in this incident, but having said that every time something like this happens is very concerning for the police, it is very concerning for the Toronto District School Board and for the students alike,” Albanese told reporters.

According to the police, six “persons of interest” who fled the scene have been identified. They believe that some are students who attend the school. They were last scene heading eastbound on Cosburn Avenue.

Albanese said that police are in the process of “trying to piece together what their respective roles are.”

Police have not yet recovered a weapon.

Ryan Bird, Executive officer at the Toronto District School Board addressed reporters at the scene.

“We’re going to make sure that we are supporting our students and staff here, whether it be through our professional support services staff, making sure that tomorrow they’re on site for anyone that wants to talk about this.” he said.
