Foul play suspected for missing GTA lawyer accused of mortgage fraud

Police suspect foul play in the disappearance of a Toronto-area lawyer who went missing nearly two months ago.

Real estate lawyer Isabella Dan, 53 was last seen on March 3 at around 8:30 p.m. leaving her Markham condominium in the area of Water Walk Drive and Verclaire Gate. Witnesses say they saw her entering a Porsche Cayenne parked outside her building.

York Regional Police have called Dan’s disappearance “suspicious” and “unusual.”

Court documents filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice show that at the time of her disappearance, Dan was facing at least four civil lawsuits related to mortgage fraud, and allege that she acted in a conflict of interest and took client trust funds. The Law Society of Ontario has obtained a court order to take control of her business accounts and files.

According to the most recent statement, “Dan denies that she was negligent in any way or that she breached any duties owed to the plaintiff. In representing and advising the plaintiff, Dan at all times exercised the requisite degree of care and skill.”

Police also said Dan might have gone by other names, including Rui Dan and Rourou Dan. They also say in the months since she went missing, they have yet to speak to anyone who knows her in her personal life.

Whitney told Global News that they are digging as deep as possible to get some answers.

“We hear the same things that everybody else hears, and we’re looking into things as deeply as possible,” he said. “We’re looking into associations that Isabella has had with businesses, business partners, whether or not those relationships were going well or if there were troubles.”

Dan was last seen wearing a beige coat with a fur collar, black pants and was carrying a red gym bag.

Anyone with information about Dan’s disappearance, or anyone who may have known her personally is asked to contact York Regional Police.
