Ontarians, brace yourselves — our not-so-fair province has been featured on another list, and this one might shock you. A new report has put not one, not two, but three Ontario towns on the list of the top six places to live in Canada with the best quality of life.

The report by Moving Waldo assessed cities in Canada based on safety, affordability and quality of life, and it placed Wellington County in the top spot. With an average housing cost of $861,528, average one-bedroom rent of $1,738 and a Crime Severity Index (CSI) of 27.80 where below 70 indicates low crime and above 140 indicates very high crime, this southwestern town was crowned “convenient for outdoorsy” types. 

Locals referred to the area’s location as “strategic,” as you can easily access Brampton, Mississauga, Kitchener and even Toronto. The town also reportedly has low crime, a low unemployment rate and healthy population growth. 

That’s not all — our very own LaSalle, a small town in Essex County, took third place! The average rent in town for a one-bedroom is even lower than Wellington County at $1,342, the average housing price is $879,017 and it’s similarly ranked on the CSI at just 30.18. Named “ideal for raising a family” by the publication, other highlights include 40 km of paved biking trails, over 100 acres of parkland, easy access to Windsor and several sporting facilities — plus Night Markets featuring music, vendors and food throughout the summer. 

Not to be forgotten, Burlington was ranked fifth place, below Lévis, Que. A so-called “small charming town with big amenities,” this Ontario town is in the GTA and highlighted as a great place to live for those seeking professional opportunities. Average rent for a one-bedroom there is at $1,834, while average housing costs $861,528 — and a pleasantly low CSI of 31.04. 

If you’re looking to improve your quality of life without going too far, these three spots might worth looking into. Of course, if you’d rather abandon Ontario entirely, you can always try one of the other three spots on the list — Oak Bay, B.C., Lévis, Que. and Edmundston, N.B.
