Bennington Heights resident and beloved actress Sheila McCarthy — currently shooting a horror movie called The Wanted — stumbled upon the Evergreen Brick Works at 550 Bayview Ave. while out walking her dog Tess, and she’s loved it ever since. Here is what she learned.
How long have you lived in Bennington Heights?
Almost three years. I’ve had a cousin who has lived here 25 years and I’ve always loved it. It’s a funny little neighbourhood, and a well kept secret.
And when did you come upon the Brick Works?
On a walk with the dog actually. I mean, I’d always driven by on the DVP or the Bayview Extension and said I must go there sometime. As it turns out, there is a ravine walk just a block from my house, and down to there is 20 minutes and it’s beautiful.
What is your inside tip?
Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon. I would say if you’re not interested in crowds, come during the week. The market isn’t open, but you can still go to the garden shop, the restaurant. And explore the ravine and the ponds. They are beautiful. There is a leash-free park.
What do you come for?
The coffee. I’m coming for the coffee. But I also especially love … the Montforte cheeses (at the farmers’ market). I lived in Stratford for 25 years, where they are from, and although they are as dear as gold, they are beautiful cheeses. Sometimes I come down at the end of the day when things aren’t quite as busy. I love the idea of boutique shopping for bits of food here and there. It’s a walk for the dog, and I end up getting to come to this treasure.
What do you love about it?
It’s more of an experience to come and maybe get off your phone for a minute and sit with a newspaper or your family and look at each other for a minute.
Favourite thing to do?
When I have coffee as a destination I'm happy. Summer, winter, whenever, it started out to be something to do with the dog and now I just love coming here.
And what are you working on currently?
I'm right in the middle of shooting a horror movie in Hamilton called The Wanting. It's sort of a cross between Rosemary's Baby and Bewitched, and I play the next-door-neighbour who is ultimately the evil one. So, it's really fun to do.
Who is in it with you?
Adam Brody from The OC, do you know him? My daughter went, 'Mom, he was my high school crush.' And Amanda Crew, a Canadian girl, she's on Silicon Valley.
