My childhood heyday took place during the ’90s, making me a child of grunge through and through. While most girls in my grade five class were obsessing over Backstreet Boys, I was busy daydreaming about Billy Corgan. I owe it all to my mom for handing me Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins, because it was the album that altered my pre-tween life.

It looks like Canadian fashion cornerstone Holt Renfrew is launching a slight counterattack on American fashion giant Nordstrom. According to The Globe and Mail, Holts has released plans to open a series of lower-priced stores, named hr2, early next year. The news comes just as Nordstrom sets plans to move north in 2014. Coincidence?

As the fifth and final day of Fashion Week dawned, many greeted it with a sigh of relief, having reached their fashion fix of the season. Travis Taddeo saw folks piling into the studio space, and after incensed photographers yelled at someone obscuring their shots - in neon runners, but of course - the show began. The young Montreal-based designer put forth a edgy collection, which was influenced by Japonisme, along with a pinch of kink.

Rachel Sin was the first show we took in on the fourth day. For spring, the young designer sent out a series of looks inspired by architect Mies van der Rohe, aiming to translate his architectural lines into her garments.

If Sex and the City’s Samantha Jones can’t do it, what shopaholic can? That is, skip the two-year queue for an Hermès Birkin bag, the ultimate status symbol? Well, Toronto fashionistas will have their chance this weekend.

It can be hard to tap into fall’s military vibe without toeing the line between on-trend and soldier poseur. Enter loden green: a greyish shade of olive drab that won’t get you mistaken for a cadet.

Day three got up and running with Matis, the secondary line from designer Lucian Matis. Shown in the studio space, the collection began on a strong note with a floor-length stunner done in a multihued floral pattern on a white backdrop.

As the longest day of Fashion Week, day two got off to a relatively early start with Adrian Wu’s latest collection. In the past, the young designer has shown in the smaller studio space; this time, he presented in the main runway room, relinquishing some of the intimacy.

When a piece of fashion goes viral (especially when it involves a collaboration) everyone is like, “I need it now,” and I am no exception. Exhibit A: a pair of oxblood shooties (that’s a shoe with a side of bootie to you) designed by Flare Magazine’s Fashion Director, Elizabeth Cabral, for Aldo. I mean, what is there to say about these things? They are a-ma-zing.

With last week’s so-called rogue fashion collections packed up and away, this week marks the city’s official Fashion Week. As per usual, the kick-off show arrived from Holt Renfrew, which always manages to draw a lively crowd with plenty of bold-faced names spilling out from its midst.

Kid Icarus may be known as Kensington Market’s under-the-radar stationery and print shop, but with its recent move, the “under-the-radar” part may be scratched out. Owned and operated by Michael Viglione and Bianca Bickmore, the new spot is all retail in the front, while the back area has all the fixings for printing.

Following a night’s sleep, the fashion pack was back at it again for the second round of The Collections. The crowd — many of whom were dressed fittingly in military greens — gathered early for a menswear showing from Klaxon Howl. Designer Matt Robinson sent out a spring/summer collection imbued with just what followers have come to expect: militaristic influences and work gear tinged with a touch of urbanity and plenty of swagger.

It doesn’t matter what season it is, or whether it’s on trend or not: to us, denim is always in. So much so that we have a goal to own, at some point in our lifetime, every kind of staple wardrobe piece in denim. Jeans? Easy, obviously. Shirts and skirts aren’t so hard to find either. But a dress? That can be tougher to find when you’re looking for just the right one.

Although Toronto Fashion Week officially rears its head next week, the so-called Rogue Fashion Week is now upon us. This time around, powerhouse IMG has purchased the rights to our official Week. A number of young designers involved with The Fashion Collective have decamped, choosing to put on their own series of shows — dubbed The Collections — at the Burroughes Building. Laura Siegel kicked off the series of spring/summer 2013 collections.

Toronto’s Fashion Week starts on Monday, but with the amount of off-schedule shows and presentations taking place already, it’s safe to say that Fashion Week has extended itself into a full two weeks. That’s two weeks of extra-long days and fashion madness at its finest. But mainly, it’s two weeks full of wondering how to get dressed fabulously in the shortest amount of time possible.

Every fall and winter, three in five Toronto men succumb to "everything black" syndrome — an affliction that leads to wearing dark colours as the weather gets colder. But, there is hope.

Not everyone looks for glitz and glamour when it comes to their choice in jewellery. For some, it’s about an everyday, understated and sentimental piece. For others, it’s about wearing something unique that’s like a piece of art.

Gravitypope has been fulfilling “shoe dreams” (yes, that’s a real thing, according to a satisfied customer on Facebook) since 1990. Originally just a fancy shoe store in Edmonton, the footwear chain expanded to Calgary and Vancouver, adding clothing and accessories into the mix. Now, the retailer is setting up shop in Toronto at Queen and Ossington.

Throwing on a good black leather jacket, especially of the motorcycling kind, can edge up any outfit. Case in point: when myself and some other fashion bloggers in the city were asked to wear Rachel Rachel Roy to the designer’s recent appearance at The Bay, each and every one of us showed up with a black biker jacket overtop of our RRR dresses of choice. Basically, it’s a no-brainer for making anything look extra cool, and it’s so easy to throw on.

Wandering the racks of the new Topman at The Bay on Queen Street, it's easy to get overwhelmed by some of the shop's trendier pieces. But if there's one thing the English do well, it's the classics.

Walking into your local H&M is like entering a botanical garden: everything, from pants to blouses, is printed with pops of blossoming florals. These days, the seasonal rules of fashion have long been forgotten. We’re seeing sweaters — and even head-to-toe black — in summer, and while spring is normally the season for pretty florals, they’ve come early this year.

It’s a refreshing feeling to look down at an outfit — one that makes you feel at your most stylish — and realize that every item was bought at home, in Toronto. So often, when I’m asked about items I’m wearing, or when I ask other people, the answer is always: “Oh, I got this in New York!” Or Paris, or London, or Hong Kong… you get the idea.

Looking at a jam-packed wardrobe and feeling like you’ve worn every piece to death is the worst feeling. On those days, putting together a fresh outfit can feel tortuous and nearly impossible. On the other hand, the absolute best feeling is turning around and seeing the entire closet with what seems like a fresh set of eyes and finding something new buried deep within the old.
