Gentleman’s Choice: a piqué cotton blazer from Toronto’s newly-opened Massimo Dutti

Every time a new Toronto shop selling menswear opens it doors, it does so to the resounding cheers of sartorially-inclined guys who want to up their style game. Yesterday, Massimo Dutti opened its first North American store in the Eaton Centre, a stone’s throw from Harry Rosen’s new über-location. For the uninitiated, think Zara’s roguishly handsome older brother.

What I Wore: vintage finds from Penny Arcade and Value Village, plus, the best pair of $8 sunglasses ever

What I Wore: vintage finds from Penny Arcade and Value Village, plus, the best pair of $8 sunglasses ever

This edition of What I Wore is dedicated, in loving memory, to my sunglasses. We had a good two-year run before they were tragically lost at sea. Well, really, they were lost at lake while I tried to prove to my brother that I am still the underwater gymnast star I was as a child. Note to self: in the future, remove sunglasses before attempting backwards somersaults and handstands beneath the blue surface. Also, you are not as skilled as you once were, sorry.

Grab of the Week: a tank top that’s practically a basic

Grab of the Week: a tank top that’s practically a basic

“Buying a basic” in fashion speak means going far beyond the average crew neck T-shirt or neutral-coloured underwear from Haines.  Most often, the phrase “it’s practically a basic” is used to justify the purchase of any new wardrobe piece that could be worn more than once.

What I Wore: a crew sweatshirt from a local company (because yes, sweater season is almost upon us)

What I Wore: a crew sweatshirt from a local company (because yes, sweater season is almost upon us)

Dare I ask, but could it actually be sweater weather already? To be honest, I’ve welcomed the recent cool-down with open arms for two reasons. The main one is that this summer’s extremely high temperatures kept me clung to an air conditioner and frightened of the outdoors for three months straight. The second is that, well, I just really love sweaters, layering and wearing clothes in general.

Not all Canadian menswear is built the same. Nor should it be. Just ask Matteo Sgaramella, the 24-year-old Forest Hill designer behind Outclass.

Grab of the Week: a kitschy stoneware mug

Back to school is just around the corner (already). Even if you’re not heading back to hit the books, it’s always nice to be reminded that you still know your ABCs and can sing the alphabet at the drop of a hat. This week, grade yourself, a friend or a loved one with an alphabetical mug. In the adult world, you can pretend whatever letter you choose (even if it’s your initial) would get an A grade.

What I Wore: print on print with Nowhereland, Christopher Kane, Olivia and Joy, Tory Burch and Chanel

Print on print — I’m still not over it. And since I first tiptoed into the trend, I’ve now made a head-first dive straight in. Perhaps it’s because of the colder weather setting in that I can feel my love for all-black everything re-emerging with a vengeance. But until then, I’m making a point to go balls out with print on print. Like, in an extreme way.

One Direction's new Toronto pop-up shop opens this Saturday; pandemonium to ensue

If you don’t know what makes you beautiful, then perhaps you might want to head over to the new One Direction pop-up shop, which will open in Toronto on August 18 and run until September 2. Because, obviously, nothing says you’re beautiful quite like wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the likenesses of Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis.

Toronto Fashion Week: IMG is in; Robin Kay is out

Toronto’s fashion world has been all a-Twitter since it was revealed yesterday that IMG Canada bought Toronto Fashion Week from the Fashion Design Council of Canada. The coup means that, after this year, Toronto Fashion Week will be run by IMG Canada and IMG Fashion, the international fashion management group that also runs New York Fashion Week and other fashion weeks. It also means that FDCC’s long-time executive director Robin Kay is out.

Grab of the Week: cropped pants that are perfect for Dîner en Blanc

Toronto is having a party — er, picnic — at a top-secret location this evening. Dîner en Blanc (have you heard of it?) is a flash mob picnic that hails all the way from Paris. The mysterious outdoor feast seemingly combines the aesthetic of The Great Race with Parisian chic, and it is absolutely mandatory to wear all white.

Sometimes, the only good answer to accessorizing in the summer is a good weave. And why not? You’ve gotta find some way to make a ponytail look more interesting after a while.

Free People opens its first international store in Yorkville

Free People officially opened its Toronto store today, and yesterday we got a sneak peak at the new space, perfectly situated in a three-storey building in Yorkville. The store channels the brand’s signature haute boho aesthetic, but the simple white exterior belies the profusion of floral prints and patchwork waiting inside.

Grab of the Week: a pair of trans-seasonal, glam-rock ankle boots

It’s that time of year when you want to take advantage of summer sales, but at the same time prep for your new fall wardrobe. Designer shoe sales can be especially luring in the summer months, but who wants to wait another year to wear beautiful sandals? The solution: hunting for trans-seasonal pieces.

Far Away Eyes, an eclectic fashion boutique, opens on Queen East

Walking into Katelyn Joliat’s new Queen East store, Far Away Eyes, we’re not immediately certain what kind of establishment we’re dealing with. With an assortment of intricate, hand-crafted jewellery, a rack of white graphic tees paired with classic denim and a variety of eclectic house-wares — all carefully displayed using items from Joliat’s childhood pastimes — you feel more like you’re entering a minuscule, beautifully-curated gallery than a retail business.

What I Wore: three outfits that are perfect for a weekend of partying at Osheaga

Although I am generally a huge advocate of supporting our many talented local designers, there is a time when the cheap cheerfulness of fast fashion comes in handy. A prime example being when one has to pack for a fast-approaching three-day-long music festival.
