Weekly Restaurant Recap rounds up the week’s Toronto restaurant news. In this edition: a new barbecue-oriented supper club for Queen East, Indian street food comes to Yonge Street, a popular restaurant gets into brunch and more.

Opening soon

  • Opening at 254 Spadina Avenue in Chinatown is Celebrity Hot Pot, which earns points for its quirky name alone (with honourable mentions to the logo). [NOW Magazine]
  • It looks like Toronto is about to get more barbecue with Que, a new supper club that’s making its way to 364 Queen East. That’s right, a barbecue-oriented supper club. Consider our curiosity piqued. [Que]
  • Jumping onto the street food bandwagon is The Kathi Roll Express, opening soon near Yonge and Wellesley. For those who have never heard of a kathi roll, it’s a street-food sandwich originating from Kolkata, India, featuring Indian flatbread with vegetables or various meats. [The Kathi Roll Express]
  • The pairing that everyone has been waiting for (or maybe it’s just us) is finally here! Capitano Burgers and Gelato is setting up shop at 645 Yonge Street. Expect diners to dip their French fries into gelato for that extra dab of healthiness.
  • The owner of Black Camel is opening another venture called Boar, The Grid reports. Much like Black Camel, Boar will be sandwich-oriented, albeit in a more “cozy” space (it will seat only eight). [The Grid]
  • Urban tavern (which is a fancy way of saying upscale pub) Against the Grain is opening a second location in Leaside. The plans look promising, even if there’s no lake to gaze upon while sitting on the patio. [Read our post here]
  • With a location just north of Parkdale’s banned restaurant zone, the upcoming Electric Mud BBQ is slated to open in Stampede Bison Grill’s former space. Rumour has it that the new restaurant is from the team behind Grand Electric, though when we asked co-owner Ian McGrenaghan about his plans for a new restaurant a few months ago, he didn’t reveal much. [The Grid]
  • The team behind Torito is opening a new restaurant near Queen and Shaw. The name of the new place hasn’t been made public yet, but the restaurant will serve Spanish tapas, paella and more. [Read our post here]

Newly opened

  • Joining Pizzeria Libretto and Mr. Pide on the increasingly pizza-filled Danforth strip is Big House Pizza. The pizzeria has a few tongue-in-cheek menu options, such as Rob “The Jerk” Ford — a pizza containing pulled jerk chicken — and the John A. McDonald (sic), which features ingredients that should please Big Mac fans.
  • The small Taqueria kiosk at Cumberland Terrace has moved to a bigger space at Yonge and Charles. The restaurant serves up a bit of everything, from tacos filled with pulled pork to hand made corn chips to halibut ceviche. Plus, just about everything is made in-house.
  • Melt Grilled Cheese has finally opened at 300 Richmond Street, offering up “grilled cheese with a twist” at a very affordable $10-or-less price point. [Read our post here]
  • New barbecue joint Aft is in its soft-opening phase. Aft is trying out some potential dishes, such as the double-smoked pork chop, before deciding what will be on the full menu. [Aft]

Change-ups

  • Splendido fans rejoice! The restaurant will begin serving brunch, for the first time, starting March 31 and continuing every Sunday after that (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.). The menu has yet to be finalized, but we’re told there will be large pre-order items available, including a seafood tower. And don’t worry about the lineup, the restaurant will take brunch reservations.
  • We’ve learned that chef Jonathan Pong has left Hoof Raw Bar, and that Raw Bar’s former sous chef, Amancio dos Santos, is now in charge of the kitchen.
  • The Drake Hotel has hired chef Ted Corrado, who earned a stellar reputation for his work at c5, as its executive chef. [Read our post here]
  • Guu is now serving lunch at both of its Toronto locations. And although lunch is currently only available on weekdays, here’s hoping that it becomes a weekend offering, too. [Read our post here]
  • Canada’s first Grey Goose Lounge will be opening up inside Muzik nightclub later this month. The lounge will serve a roster of new cocktails featuring — wait for it — Grey Goose vodka.
