First Look: Moo Milk Bar, a newly-opened baked goods shop in the Beach

While it may sound like something out of A Clockwork Orange, Moo Milk Bar is a decidedly family-friendly destination in the Beach. Opened last week by New York City expat Danielle Oron, the shop specializes in a combo that oozes childhood decadence: cookies and milk.

Oron trained at the International Culinary Centre (then known as the French Culinary Institute) in New York City before cooking at restaurants such as Japonais and Pure Food and Wine. Upon moving to Canada, she continued her education with a course in cake design at Bonnie Gordon College, then spent some time working with We Bake in Heels.

The new venture is a chance for Oron to get creative with her confectionary skills. A fixed selection of house-made cookies ($2, or a half dozen for $10) anchors the sweets menu, but rotating specials keep things interesting. When we were there, Oron was whipping up pretzel-bottom “blondies” (which are like brownies, but without cocoa powder, $3.50) and Oreo cheesecake pies ($6.50).

Regularly appearing items include a classic chocolate chip cookie, a chocolate cookie and a cowgirl cookie (with espresso, toffee bits, chocolate chunks, pretzels and mini chocolate chips), along with an ice cream sandwich ($3) featuring house-made vanilla ice cream.

Moo Milk Bar’s selection of milks ($3.50 for 350 ml) is flavoured in-house, with options including chocolate (made with Dutch cocoa powder), strawberry or banana (both made with real fruit). All flavours are available in almond milk form, too.

An order of milk with a cookie is $5.
